HOW TO PLANT WITH THE 6x24" SONATA TROUGH
In this project, we will plant the 6x24" Sonata Trough with outdoor summer plants.
Planting a low-profile decorative summer container for your front porch small space is easy with the TierraVerde 6” Trough. Alternatively, plant several and use along patio borders or to define a walking path!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
- 6x24" TierraVerde Trough planter
- nine 4" outdoor plants, (5 of one type, and 4 of another)
- planting soil
- watering can and water
- garden gloves
- small trowel, optional
For this project, we are using five variegated grass perennial plants (moor grass) and four broad leaf annuals (coleus).
If you wish to remove the water reservoir, this will allow more space for larger plants. Simply remove the lock washer and pull out the reservoir. Keep for future use in new planting projects next season. In this case, we are planting nine 4” plants, which all adequately fit into the TierraVerde 6x24” Trough with the water reservoir in place.
Locate the plug at the base of the planter.
Remove this for outdoor use to allow for drainage especially during rainfall.
Choose plants with a variety of shape and colors. We have chosen coleus, with lively green and deep red leaves, paired with young, bright variegated moor grass.
The grasses will grow taller throughout the season, and provides contrast with the broad coleus leaves, which will broaden and spill over time.
Arrange the plants in a staggered pattern, placing plants to the far right or far left of the trough, and alternating varieties to fill in the entire 24” of the planter.
Fill in with soil as required.
Water liberally and enjoy!
Keep watering as soil conditions dry, noting that the water reservoir will hold about 1.5” of water. The rest will drain out through the drain hole. Container plants need more frequent watering than garden bed plants, especially in a covered porch area, so check soil regularly.
